Battlefield Hardline

PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC (Microsoft Windows), Xbox 360, Xbox One • 2015

Should you play it?

Battlefield: Hardline features a whole new variety of gameplay that breaks away from the traditional Battlefield game modes. The new game modes are Heist Mode, Rescue Mode, Hotwire Mode and Bloodmoney Mode. The focus of the game has been shifted to police rather than the millitary background that has spanned the whole series up to now. Players will have access to various millitary grade weapons and vehicles as well as having police equipment such as tasers and handcuffs.

What works

  • Engaging multiplayer with diverse modes like hotwire and blood money
  • Single-player campaign with stealth and arrest mechanics
  • Strong audiovisual presentation and destructible environments
  • Episodic narrative structure with character-driven story
  • Vehicle-based gameplay adds variety

Things to keep in mind

  • Single-player story is predictable and clichéd
  • Progression system uneven and grindy
  • Multiplayer teamwork often lacking with strangers
  • Occasional technical issues like hit registration problems
  • Morally problematic and tone-deaf police premise
